A View into the book you can find under "http://verlag.sandstein.de/reader/98-449_Bellotto"Bernardo Bellotto (1722–1780) is one of the most famous vedute painters of the 18th century. His views and prospects of town and country are so rich in detail, so precisely and meticulously painted that historic places come to life again before the viewer’s eyes. But far from being simply faithful reproductions of sights, his vedute are rather carefully planned compositions, the result of the artist availing himself of all the technical know-how of his age. During his time in Dresden, Bellotto created some of his most important works, which now form part of the collection at the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister. These vedute still influence the way Dresden is perceived today, at home and abroad. They present a wonderful panorama of the old Augustan city, on which two of the greatest art collectors in German history – Augustus the Strong and his son Augustus III – left their mark. Thanks to these two electors, who simultaneously held the crown of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the Dresden art collections flourished, becoming some of the most important in the world. This volume traces the various stages of Bellotto’s career, focussing in detail on the canvases of his Dresden period. It also examines the history of the world-famous picture gallery, the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister, and the era of Baroque collection-building in Dresden.

nd Selected papers presented at the 22 Annual Conference of the German Classification Society GfKI (Gesellschaft fUr Klassifikation), held at the Uni versity of Dresden in 1998, are contained in this volume of 'Studies in Clas sification, Data Analysis, and Knowledge Organization' . One aim of GfKI was to provide a platform for a discussion of results con cerning a challenge of growing importance that could be labeled as 'Classi fication in the Information Age' and to support interdisciplinary activities from research and applications that incorporate directions of this kind. As could be expected, the largest share of papers is closely related to classi fication and-in the broadest sense-data analysis and statistics. Additionally, besides contributions dealing with questions arising from the usage of new media and the internet, applications in, e.g., (in alphabetical order) archeolo gy, bioinformatics, economics, environment, and health have been reported. As always, an unambiguous assignment of results to single topics is some times difficult, thus, from more than 130 presentations offered within the scientific program 65 papers are grouped into the following chapters and subchapters: Plenary and Semi Plenary Presentations - Classification and Information - Finance and Risk Classification and Related Aspects of Data Analysis and Learning - Classification, Data Analysis, and Statistics - Conceptual Analysis and Learning Usage of New Media and the Internet - Information Systems, Multimedia, and WWW - Navigation and Classification on the Internet and Virtual Univ- sities Applications in Economics

The Lesser Evil

The third and final volume of the diaries of Victor Klemperer, a Jew in Dresden who survived the war and whose diaries have been hailed as one of the 20th century's most important chronicles. This volume opens in June 1945. The immediate postwar period produces many shocks and revelations - some people have behaved better than Klemperer had believed, others much worse. His sharp observations are now turned on the East German Communist Party, which he himself joins, and he notes many similarities between Nazi and Communist behaviour. Politics, he comes to believe, is above all the choice of the 'lesser evil'. He is made a professor in Greifswald, then in Berlin and Halle. His wife Eva dies in 1951 but within a year at the age of 70 he marries one of his students, an unlikely but successful love-match. He serves in the GDR's People's Chamber and represents East German scholarship abroad. But it is the details of everyday life, and the honesty and directness, that make these diaries so fascinating. 'Klemperer was a shrewd judge of human nature and unsparing of his own. As a diarist he is in the Pepys class...' (Norman Lebrecht, Spectator)

Kurt Vonnegut

NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY Newsweek/The Daily Beast • The Huffington Post • Kansas City Star • Time Out New York • Kirkus Reviews This extraordinary collection of personal correspondence has all the hallmarks of Kurt Vonnegut's fiction. Written over a sixty-year period, these letters, the vast majority of them never before published, are funny, moving, and full of the same uncanny wisdom that has endeared his work to readers worldwide. Included in this comprehensive volume: the letter a twenty-two-year-old Vonnegut wrote home immediately upon being freed from a German POW camp, recounting the ghastly firebombing of Dresden that would be the subject of his masterpiece Slaughterhouse-Five; wry dispatches from Vonnegut's years as a struggling writer slowly finding an audience and then dealing with sudden international fame in middle age; righteously angry letters of protest to local school boards that tried to ban his work; intimate remembrances penned to high school classmates, fellow veterans, friends, and family; and letters of commiseration and encouragement to such contemporaries as Gail Godwin, Günter Grass, and Bernard Malamud. Vonnegut's unmediated observations on science, art, and commerce prove to be just as inventive as any found in his novels-from a crackpot scheme for manufacturing 'atomic' bow ties to a tongue-in-cheek proposal that publishers be allowed to trade authors like baseball players. ('Knopf, for example, might give John Updike's contract to Simon and Schuster, and receive Joan Didion's contract in return.') Taken together, these letters add considerable depth to our understanding of this one-of-a-kind literary icon, in both his public and private lives. Each letter brims with the mordant humor and openhearted humanism upon which he built his legend. And virtually every page contains a quotable nugget that will make its way into the permanent Vonnegut lexicon. • On a job he had as a young man: 'Hell is running an elevator throughout eternity in a building with only six floors.' • To a relative who calls him a 'great literary figure': 'I am an American fad-of a slightly higher order than the hula hoop.' • To his daughter Nanny: 'Most letters from a parent contain a parent's own lost dreams disguised as good advice.' • To Norman Mailer: 'I am cuter than you are.' Sometimes biting and ironical, sometimes achingly sweet, and always alive with the unique point of view that made him the true cultural heir to Mark Twain, these letters comprise the autobiography Kurt Vonnegut never wrote. Praise for Kurt Vonnegut: Letters 'Splendidly assembled . . . familiar, funny, cranky . . . chronicling [Vonnegut's] life in real time.'-Kurt Andersen, The New York Times Book Review '[This collection is] by turns hilarious, heartbreaking and mundane. . . . Vonnegut himself is a near-perfect example of the same flawed, wonderful humanity that he loved and despaired over his entire life.'-NPR 'Congenial, whimsical and often insightful missives . . . one of [Vonnegut's] very best.'-Newsday 'These letters display all the hallmarks of Vonnegut's fiction-smart, hilarious and heartbreaking.'-The New York Times Book Review
